When I turn the handle to open the door a bolt, inside the door, to secure it at the top drops and one at the bottom of the door lifts. Sometimes the one at the top doesn't drop and the door won't open. Any suggestions?

Sandy i have just had the same problem. The nice fixing man said that eventually it will happen and the only thing to do is replace the door :-( I will watch this thread with interest.
sandy, I think you can replace the locking mechanism, I did this on a couple of double glazed window a few year ago.
As Tony, if you remove the whole lock Mech, there should be the makers mark on the plate, take the details & contact the makers for a replacement. It may be a simple fix though Sandy have you checked the innards?
Woofgang, with respect to your answer, (only thing to do is replace the door) I've heard this statement many times before the door is a separate unit to the locks.
I had a similar problem with to top runner on my patio door, I was told I needed to replace it! With a bit of googling I managed to find the manufacturer & got the parts for about £20-00...saved me about £900-00!
TWR, its the inner top and bottom bolt mechanism that has failed...it was explained to me (right or wrong) that this is installed as the door is made and you cant take the door apart to replace it. The lock still works fine.
Hi, I would have thought the the Mech was screwed to the door, I'm going off our own.
They usually are TWR, well ours are anyway.
It may well be that nothing is broken, Sandy. These things never get any lubrication throughout their lives. That might be all that it needs.
If you can open it one more time, sliding pation doors usually lift off for maintenance. Perhaps the pins can be reached then.

Thank you all. Next time I get it opened I'll try the oil.
my door isnt a slider, its a french door and the top and bottom are sealed :-(
Hi Woofgang, I'm not in any way undermining your post, If I was your neighbour I would have sorted for you.
these locking systems sometimes have a method where the locking bar at the top and bottom are on a small plate about 2mm thick by about 15mm wide and 50mm long with teeth along the long edges, these teeth fit into an opposing bar that are connected to the handle system, this is so they can be slackened off and adjusted by sliding the bolt up and down the bar.....if this mechanism works loose then the two parts will separate and not function......when the door is open, you should see a set off screws along the locking system and i would think the ones at the top have worked loose.....its just a case off tightening all the screws and lubricating the mechanism........when these doors are made they are just long lengths of profile, cut, mitred, metal strengtheners added and welded together to form the door at the correct size, then all the hardware is added afterwards like hinges, locking systems etc......you never need to replace a door because of a failed lock or part of a lock
TWR, I didn't feel undermined. the actual lock can be unscrewed and changed but the bolt mechanism seems to be sealed into the door.
