I live in a top floor maisonette and am joint freeholder with the downstairs flat. Downstairs recently sold up and someone new moved in so I now have a new joint freeholder but I cannot, for love nor money, get the estate agent to tell me who the new joint freeholder is. I'd like their name and number in case I need to contact them.

For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.I expect they are interpreting the Data Protection Act to the letter as that protects the consumer from what companies can do with your data. If the consumer gives their consent for their details to be passed to you, there is no reason why the Estate Agent can`t pass on their details. There`s no reason why the Estate Agent can`t go to the new leaseholder and ask if they can pass on his/her details to you.
It is often the case that the person in the top floor holds the freehold of downstairs which is subject to a lease of the downstairs. The downstairs people own the freehold of the top floor again subject to a lease of that level. So you may not actually be a joint owner and the ownership of the downstairs lease and upstairs freehold can change without you being involved. As mentioned above LR will supply Official Copies.
