I asked on a local FB forum for estimae to paint 8 doors and frames
1 side only, newish doors, only previously painted in Eggshell finish.

Quick reply, £510. Even quicker reply from me, No thank you..he responded equally as quickly, sorry I made a mistake should have been £410.

I imagine its a "mistake" aka, ploy, he makes regular hoping to get the work.

If he offered free now, I'd not employ him. Feeling he would be looking at any way he could maximise his charge..

What sort of estimate is reasonable would you say. X

Dusty's link tells you a lot, Thisoldbird.

£410 is only £50 per door. (Including frame & materials)

That would be manageable if it was simply a case of putting the paint on.
Then there's: preparation/rubbing down/stopping in
That's assuming there's no change of colour involved (that can put the cost up a lot.)

Hopefully someone else will see this and give their opinion (ken4155 maybe?)

I assume you both sides of all doors and frames painted, to my mind the first quote was cheap
I've just you only want one side painted only. Still reasonable if he does a proper job
I think i would have said no too, anyway, whatever the quote he has lost your trust now, get another quote.

Exactly Darcey123.

I have a feeling I'll not get my doors painted if his quote considered normal. My funds don't go that far..

Thats a penalty of old age I'm afraid..
My late husband and I did all our own jobs, to a high standard.
£510 seems a bit cheap to me.

If you want a good job you have to pay for it. If this chap is willing to do it for 410 then I doubt he is a professional, certainly not of any repute anyway.
My council has a list of reliable, fair tradespeople and I have found it invaluable in the past, I cannot stand the thought of being ripped off.
It might be worth checking your council's website or giving them a call.

Age UK may also be helpful, I know they have a list of people who do smaller jobs for a reasonable fee.
