I have decided to change my buildings insurance because the quote I got this year was expensive. The Halifax have now said that they must be named on my new insurance as they are my mortgage lender. Is this right?

yes - you'll find this question asked whoever you insure with. Why, I don't know but it's standard.
The mortgage company will be named on the insurance because as they have money invested in the building they would lose out if the house burned down, the insurance paid you - and then you did a runner.

I will have to get in touch with my new insurers because they never asked who my mortgage was with unless they thought I didn't have one!
a lot of mortgage companies do ask for this and don't be caught out as we were last year - when you get your new certificate you are meant to send a copy of it to mortgage company, every year - we didn't realise this and they sent us a forty quid fine for not doing it. B*****ds
