Not purely based upon that as a reason.

Yes. However the local authority has a duty under the Children (Scotland) Act to rehouse homeless people who have children. I'm pretty sure this would be the case for English Housing Law too.
If you signed an Assured Shorthold Tenancy (AST) agreement, your landlord does not have to give a reason for eviction, but must apply for a court ordered eviction.
