Handy man - what is their rate per day

does anyone know how much a handy man / woman charges per day? I have been quoted �180 per day - sounds a little dear or am i tight?

This is more a skilled tradesman's rate - though probably not for a plumber.
For what you describe I'd have reckoned �15 - �18 per hour. Where do you live?

Yeah, not so much a handy man for that much but a tradesman, who may be a good all rounder, ask if he is VAT registered, on that income he should be, then offer to pay cash. And you want him there at 7.30, and you shouldn't need to hire any tools until you are talking about a mini digger or the like.

The problem with paying them by the hour or a daily rate is that they can hang the job out, I came across this at a friend's house, I went round to walk her dog and the decorator was sitting in the garden reading his paper, I came back an hour later and he was still there, my friend was paying him �17 per hour ! The best way is to get a quote for the job you want them to do.

Absolutely. But it depends what you want doing. Handymen/women would be expected to come and do a host of several little jobs - for which the best way is to pay on a time basis, but supervise reasonably closely what is going on.

my husband has his own little business doing all property and garden maintenance. he charges much less than you say. he does charge by the hour and is often being told there is no need to work that hard. he genuinely enjoys his job and has been a 'worker' all his life. he has built up a good name for himself and 75% of his work comes from recomendations. ask if he has references oh and insurance is important too. But yes unless hes providing expensive tools/plant and materials i would say its over the top.

I've paid �70 per day recently, but the average is probably about �150.

I'm not disagreeing. There is certainly a bunch of mainly older guys out there, working towards the end of their careers, some of whom have actually retired, that are happy to work for less money. Once found, they are worth hanging on to..

We had a lot of work done 16 months ago when we moved here and paid up to �250 a day..the latter for a plumber....who was actually an Electrician, but decided to cash in on the act and fitted the bathroom.

Were we younger we'd have done the lot ourselves like we used too. Blooming robber....the loo still doesn't flush first without a lot of yanking up and down on the handle.
