Painting a 'distressed' shabby chic paint finish on varnished wood.

Can anyone advise what I need to do to prepare before painting on varnished pine wood panelling please? I want to achieve a shaker sort of shabby chic style of paint finish with the minimum of mess. Thank you in advance.

Thanks for your replies whcih are much appreciated. The paint finish doesn't have to have a 'crackled' effect but not look varnished and shiney - more of a satin pale finish. Somebody advised using a good cleaner on the old dark wood and thenvery fine steel wool to clean. The mentioned Farrow and Ball paint. Does anybody have any more advice please but will check out the links too. First ever project so want to get it right. Take care everyone!
