Any opinions on the hand-held steam cleaner such as the one shaped like a penguin or something similar please? Do they do a good job? Are they heavy to carry? Thanks.

The little hand held jobs are ok for doing very small areas, round taps or maybe removing a small stain from a carpet, but for any serious use they are too small. They run out of water too fast and cant get the steam hot enough. We bought a bigger one, about the size of a hoover, from ebay, it was brand new and only cost about 35, a full tank of  water will clean a whole living room carpet, and really shifts some muck!
I had a penguin and it packed in after 6 months.Like your previous answer it's ok for taps and the like. What i use now is my wallpaper stripper. You can buy a nozzle attachment for about 9 from B&Q which acts like a steam lance
