The bath is quite old, enamel i think, and has hard water marks on it, which i haven't been able to shift, despite lots of elbow grease, tried harpic, jif, and even old fashioned vim but but nothing gets it really clean, especially the water marks around the taps.
would appreciate any advice.

i would try a green "scrubber" with mr muscle bathroom cleaner,i find that works on most baths!
Sounds like you need Viakal which removes limescale. You will get it from most supermarkets
Deposits from hard water really need an acid cleaner to dissolve them - but most say don't use on old enamel surfaces. Bit of a Catch-22 situation>

green scrubber, i shouldn't laugh, but do you mean a green foam backed type cleaner, the sort you buy in packs of 10.

some of these cleaners can't be used on it, they actually damage the surface, i know believe me!
If it's an enamel bath you can use a rounded knife to get rid of limescale round taps then use something like harpic to get rid of any black marks the knife makes. For the water marks use a pumice stone (test a bit first) and use harpic if there are any black marks. I live in a VERY hard water area and this is what works for me if I neglect my cleaning for a while, especially an occasionally used WC
try soaking it with washing powder thats what my mum had to do with hers .
