Probably the same reasons bluebottles manage to fly in my slightly opened patio doors and make it as far as the kitchen. I don`t know the answer though :-)

Why do midgies like gin & tonic?
Why do wasps like lager?
aye, they drink it by the bottle up here
An insect's acute sense of smell enables it to find mates, locate food, avoid predators, and even gather in groups. So your conservatory must have one or more of these (Food would be my guess). Why not try net curtains?.

MacMidgies eat people..............
net curtains don't taste as good as food but they are healthier
Why did the fly fly?

Because the spider spied 'er?

they must have smelt my steak, mash and veg then...thanks for the info bimbo...
It could be that out in the open they are prey for birds so getting indoors out of the way is instinctive for them.
