Bicycles for charities

Like most people, I am aware of lots of bikes literally being thrown away, yet I know that in many poorer countries bicycles are a valued asset and the only affordable means of transport. In these places you usually see really old fashioned bikes without any gears at all yet, often, very good bikes go into landfill over here. Does anyone know of a charity which collects bikes (preferably nationwide ) in the UK for donating abroad ?

This organisation seems to do what you want, although getting the bike to them might be tricky unless you live near one of their collection points.

I think Royal Mail donate their old bikes to a charity like you describe.  maybe you could talk to your nearest main sorting office?
