In the past I have just spread the compost that I make in my compost bin on the garden, can I use it in pots and containers instead of the bought stuff from the garden centre?

not unles you have the ability to sterilise it... the pests that disperse in the garden can become a much bigger problem in a pot,
Yes, but we mix ours with a little sand/very small gravel to improve drainage.
If it is properly composted the heat should have killed off any pests and things
very few have large enough heaps to get the heat up enough these days and a bin rarely manages unless its in fill sun and turned regularly
