To tip or not to tip, that is the question.

I have bought a piece of furniture on ebay and a company I found on the tinternet won a bid to deliver. Two men are bringing it and will carry it up one flight of wide, not steep, stairs. It shouldn't take them any more than 5 mins once they arrive. So do you think I should tip them or not and if so how much? Thanks.

It's a personal decision. IMO no one should ever be tipped until we all get tipped for doing our job, but psychological pressure means I often tip anyway. Restaurants, taxis, etc.. Probably wouldn't hurt to show thanks, but it's up to you.

well if theres two of them its got to be worth £20 surely? i wouldnt give them any less, and im a pensioner.

They get paid to deliver the goods don't they, and i'm assuming you're paying for it, so why pay twice?

I think if you have bought the delivery service from EBay (didn't know you could do that) then you pay the price of the bid.

This is assuming 'Man and Van' sell their wares on EBay, and a tip would be a double whammy for them.

I`m a real sucker. I always tip unless I get bad service. OH didn`t. Once asked him had he tipped the men who delivered the new bed. He said he had, he`d told them that spider plants do very well in fish tanks.

£20 for delivering one item, no chance. If I were to decide to tip, the most would be £10. I'm a pensioner as well Georgiesmum.

If they know already that they are carrying it upstairs, they'll have factored that into the price. I wouldn't tip them, I don't tip taxi drivers either these days.

I don't mind telling you tony but I don't see what difference it makes. They are delivering it to suit themselves as I wasn't in a hurry and said do it when they are down this way. Do you tip more because they have travelled further or not tip because they have only come a couple of miles? I think that is already factored into the price. I would be more inclined to tip for politeness and taking care not to do any damage o the item and our property. Can you tell me why you think the mileage makes a difference, I may change my mind then.

have to say that I find it strange that we tip some workers and not others - who tips their doctor, post office person, shopkeeper etc - are we being conditioned to 'make up the pay' for certain sector workers.?

A pint is about £2 to £3.

If I were not so tight and decided to tip, I would take into account the distance covered as well (no idea why though, or how much distance would have to be covered to warrant a tip). Why not get some cans of lager or something and if you like the look of them and they do a good job, you can give them the cans and if they are rubbish you can drink the cans yourself?
