Thanks all, I got some stuff in Pets At Home, not licensed for human bedding though, I rang manufacturer, they said it will be ok as long as room is well ventilated, so I might take the mattresses in the garden and do it there, can't get more ventilated than that! I'm not even sure there are bedbugs, there is no evidence at all, but the kids keep complaining of itchy heads and I've noticed that daughter has what looks like bite marks, no head lice. Dog is going to be defleaed later incase it's him, that should be a laugh, I've vacuumed the beds and gone over them with a steam iron. If that doesn't work, then I don't know what.

If your children have itchy heads is sounds more like head lice than bed bugs. Wet your childrens hair and put conditioner on. Do NOT rinse this out. Now get a nit comb and a piece of white kitchen roll (not the stuff with pretty pictures on). Comb through the hair and wipe the comb onto the kitchen roll. If there are any nits you will be able to see them on the white kitchen roll.

Believe you me this is much preferable to having bed bugs. Bed bugs don't just hide in the mattress, they will be all over the bed frame and possibly surrounding area aswell. You can't really treat them yourself, you would have to call the professionals in.

Spudqueen, we did the headlice thing last week, nothing at all on their heads, I've bought new pillows and duvets, washed all the covers using sensitive stuff, don't know what else to do. The only thing I'm thinking now is, last week, daughter went to my mum's, who straightened her hair, she put loads of different sprays and god knows what in it, daughter sweats a lot in bed, so rash could be from the concoction of all that, son's head could be a coincidence as he sleeps with his head under the pillow and then the quilt over the top, so he could have some sort of heat rash. I hope it is that, else it's the quacks.

DOnt know it it helps...i seen you can freeze cushions etc to kill off stuff....

Good luck RR...big hassel isnt it....hopefully its just the heat, mabye a wee medicated shampoo will help or something.

Seriously, another stab in the dark, but i suffer from major hayfever and sometimes, my skin actually itches with the pollen and i have a rash....just an idea xxxxx (pollen sticks in hair very well xxxx)

Didn't think about the pollen thing Tinks, worth a thought. Have been trying to use TGel on them but they're not having much of it, don't blame them, it really hums.

I might be missing something here, but isn't washing their hair as soon as they get home the best first try option here?
Their grandma may be unaware that she's causing this, and you seem to be barking up the wrong tree. Why would bedbugs only attack their hair?

Not suggesting this is your solution or answer but sometimes it is not a very likely thing causing the problem . A few weeks back I had almost a similar happening and even a visit to the doc didn't help. I also considered the possibility of bed bugs. Eventually I narrowed it down to a change of washing powder - following a Which? recommendation. I went back to my usual powder and washed everything I could lay my hands on - and all is now well again!

Hi Mojay, I have washed all their stuff again and used Comfort Pure softener. I might have to try again with the baby stuff. I feel like shaving all their hair off at the moment!

Bedbugs leave a reddish lump where they've dined about the size of a matchhead. There would also be tiny traces of digested blood, brown coloured, on the bedding.

Don't tell me bed bugs are back!!! How awful. I thought they disappeared with the terrible housing conditions of the thirties. They will hide in all sorts of crevices. My grandmother had them in her house. They are horrible and they make a terrible smell when squashed. Very difficult to get rid of. If there is one good thing about the war it is that it demolished some of the slum dwellings that were there at the time so that bugs had nowhere to live.

IF and I say -if- it really is bedbugs - get straight on to the local council - they'll have a fumigation service - I'm pretty sure

After some extensive googling and investigation of mattresse etc, I've found no evidence at all of bedbugs THANK GOD! It's got to be an allergy of some description or heat rash, heyhoo, looks like a process of elimination, at least the mattresses got a good steam clean out of it all.
