The council have been round today and replaced the street lights with new 'modern' ones. Instead of the comforting, artificial orange glow the street is practically pitch black with small areas of bright, silvery light. It looks really creepy like something out of a horror movie.

We've had those for a few years here...they're a bit creepy,I agree.

We live in the sticks so they are probably old fashioned by now. I don't tend to go out in the dark but I would be less inclined to do so now.
Not as spooky as the ads that come up here in response to the word spooky. Zombies and all sorts!
I bet the venerable councillors who are "only trying to save money" still live in very well lit areas?
Do you mean anti-black street lights?
Question Author
I don't know what anti-black street lights are. These ones seemed to be powered by the same bulbs you get in plainchristmas lights - the street is practically pitch black, can't help thinking they are a bit rubbish.
They light the ground not the sky. I like them for that.
I like them for that, too.
PS - they did it TODAY? - on a Sunday? blimey
anti-black street lights?

Sorry sherrardk, it was a reference to another thread where the word "spook" was deemed o be racist
Question Author
They only seem to light about 2 sq ft of ground - seems to be big chunks of darkness. Not very comforting, glad I don't go out at night time, would be frightened out of my wits.
Question Author
Boxtops - spotted the bloke as I was getting the kids dressed in their bedroom after a bath, not something you expect to see on a Sunday morning.
Question Author
Sorry Duncer - bit slow off the mark there :(
No wonder, it was a strange accusation indeed. Spook is, to my knowledge, a distinctly American terminology.
Question Author
Boo, they are not even that nice! It's a cold kind of silver light, but it will probably make any snow we get look very festive!
I think the light they cast is adequate. You're probably just used to the whole bumming area being lit up like an orange prison yard.
Excellent typo Mojo. I meant Blumming!
"I think the light they cast is adequate. You're probably just used to the whole bumming area being lit up like an orange prison yard."

Mo-jo-jo - please explain "bumming area"?
Too late, you've already done so. I thought "bumming area" and "prison yard" in the same sentence showed some sort of misplaced correlation.
