My mum tells me the white gunk is usually because you are over-watering it. If you lightly press your finger in the soil and some sticks,it doesn't need watering but read the little card you get with the plant to see what conditions it likes as well.
Anyone feel free to correct me, wouldn't want to be respnsible for anymore plant deaths!
