Dressing a newborn
9 Answers
Ive been dressing me 2 week old in sleeveless/legless body suits and then sleepsuits (with long arms and legs) over the top. However we have now been bought a number of lovely baby outfits (dresses, tops and trousers etc) but (and it sounds silly!) do i put baby in the sleeveless body suits first with dresses over the top? Some outfits have little tops and trousers so would i use the top instead of the sleeveless body suits or as well as? Im not really sure how many layers i should be putting on!! Without the sleepsuits baby has legs exposed with dresses so i guess i should be using baby tights but as our little one was quite small, all tights we have seem huge!
And going outside...so far baby has been in her body suits and sleepsuits and then tucked in 2 blankets but should i be putting baby in baby coat or 'going out' clothes?
As you can tell I am a little confused!!

I usually use the little sleeveless body suits as vests, so they go under everything including dresses. I would put a top over it if she's wearing trousers. I usually put tights on the baby too, try Mothercare or the internet for wee totty ones for your wee girl.
As for going outside! If it's just for a walk, I put her in a vest and babygrow and then inside one of those monster fluffy babygrows/snowsuit jobs. That way she can't escape from the blankets. If I'm going shopping where I'll be inside mostly, I just dress her as normal and put a couple of little blankets on her.
But be warned, there will ALWAYS be someone who thinks you are over/under dressing your wee one.
And, congratulations, buy the way!

congrats! must have missed this news! its easy to be confused by all this - especially with girls and skirts/tights etc. i would always use the body suits/vests - in fact my lo is 2 and still wears them under everything (feel as though they help keep the nappy snug and secure). I would get some long-sleeved ones too for this time of year as babies lose heat so easily. Body suit as a starting point, and then whatever outfit your thinking of if i were you. hope you're enjoying motherhood - such good news for you xxxx
i can only tell you what we usually do (mine is 7 months old now).
for indoors she normally wears sleevless/legless vest, with long sleeved top and trousers. If wearing a dress, i put the vest on first, and leggings underneath (i can't do tights owing to my disability making it difficult)
for going out, when she was little we had a vest, top and trousers, slippers (or sleepsuit) plus 1/2 blankets (this was the summer though) now she wears all that, plus a cardigan and coat, and we have a cosytoes for the pram
