I've had a black leaved plant in an outdoor tub for several years, can't remember the name of it! leaves are like broad grass - its looking a bit sick, and I wonder if I should trim it right back ? anyone any ideas please? Thanks for any advice.

Sounds like you have 'Black Mondo Grass' there. (Ophiopogon planiscapus). It needs watering regularly but it must have good drainage! I recommend digging out the tussock. dig the hole deeper and put a good layer of gravel in the bottom, then replant. It shouldn't need any trimming or feeding. the water should be seen to drain down fairly fast. Good Luck Chip

It sounds like Lily Turf... I've had one for several years and I just leave it...Never cut it back. Mine's in a large pot by the the door and it still looking ok ..So if as you say yours is "looking a bit sick" try cutting it back and see what happens...Just checked mine again its absolutely fine...
