If its real Lloyd Loom furniture I'd suggest you keep it indoors (or sell it) as its quite valuable. Instead buy cheaper imitation for the garden or proper garden furniture which will withstand some weather.

It's made of wicker, tony - I think it's a long shot that even varnish would work long-term, it'll absorb moisture - but worth a try if gness doesn't mind losing it if it doesn't over winter

Lloyd loom is made from wire covered with paper. However well covered with paint or varnish, you can't guarantee that water won't get into the paper if table and chairs are left outside in wet weather. The water will creep along under the paint or varnish, and turn the wire rusty. Better to keep them indoors, and put them out only when it's warm, dry, and sunny. (If that ever happens!).

gness, if your going to do it I would suggest using spray cans.

I don't think so, not long-term, gness. Trouble is, if you put a cover on it to protect it from the weather, it'll sweat and go mouldy.

I've got plastic wicker out in our garden, that lasts forever :-)

I'm with Maydup, too risky to leave outdoors.
Sell it and buy outdoor furniture and you might have enough to buy an umbrella and lazy susan

Lloyd Loom looks like wicker, but is actually made from tightly twisted paper, so really not suitable for outdoor use.

Thank you all. This is Lloyd Loom I collected thirty odd years ago when it was going for next to nothing. It's been painted once or twice and when I moved to this small house I gave most away. The table is an unusual shape and I have three of the usual style chairs. I can't fit them in this house but they would look nice under the arbour for the summer.
I'm not too bothered if they don't survive but would like to give them a fighting chance so I will try the varnish.

Why don't you go to a local hardware shop that sells paint and varnish, and ask their advice?

Will do Smurf...when I am somewhere local. Bit out in the sticks here and it's nice to have tried and tested advice before I trek to the town.

If its Lloyd Loom then its made from paper and wire, few coats of yacht varnish might do it, depends on how much you value it gness, or how upset you would be if it didn't work. x
