How To Paint A Garage Door

i am thinking of painting my garage door with chestnut hammerite on the old blue door which is flaking badly-after getting rid of the flakes with a rough brush do i need to under coat the door or will it go onto the blue which is left and if i have to take all the blue off how do i do it will nitro moors do it or will it pit the aluminium under the blue?one other question would a 750 ml can of paint do the job-i am a total novice at this kind of thing.

I've been planning to do something similar to mine for the last few years. But low priority. So I'd be interested in opinions too. That said I was just going to remove the paint with a proprietary paint stripper, rinse it, and later slap the Hammerite on. Hammerite goes on over rust, I can't see it needing a primer over the door, but I may be wrong. What does it say on the can ?

Take all the old paint off, if it is flaking the rest will not be firmly attached and will come off and bring the new paint with it. Nitromores will not harm the Aluminium door. I can't say about the 750 ml of paint , there should be a guide on the can that gives the coverage, but I think you will be struggling to fully cover it with just the one can.

Hammerite make a special garage door paint.....you will need a Hammerite special metals primer if its aluminium.
For a 7' x 7' door I recon you will need at least 1 litre.

I would remove the blue paint off with a heat gun. My mother has tried nitro mors but it didn't work for her. She had about 4 layers of paint to get off first.

I personally wouldn't use this type of paint on a garage door as it is quick drying so getting a good finish could be difficult on such a large area. Better to get off all the flaking paint, prime where needed, undercoat once or twice then a good topcoat. Prepare well and give good wash down before painting. I also prefer to use oil based paints as I find the finish will be better. For a really smooth finish give a light sanding before the final coat and wipe over with a tack cloth to pick up all the tiny bits of dust you won't see before glossing but will afterwards.
