I have a Samsung laptop (not with it just now so unable to give you model type) but I was viewing tv on 4od last night and I nipped off for 5 mins came back to a black screen thinking it had gone into standby I have the mouse a wiggle nothing. So turned it on using the power button makes the usual laptop noises but the screen remains blank. Any ideas what is wrong and what can be done or can it be repaired?

Do you have an external monitor you could plug it into? Either a real monitor or a TV. To use a TV either:
* both laptop and PC should have HDMI ports or
* your TV should have a "PC" input
You'll also need a cable, either a monitor cable or a HDMI cable depending on how you're connecting it.

I do Not wish to raise your hopes but, it might help matters if you were to say what Model of Samsung you have. The more information you give, the better is the chance of a solution being suggested to overcome your problem.
It's doubtful that I will come-up-with an answer because of my lack of knowledge of Windows 8. But, hopefully, there is an ABer who will be able to offer a solution to your problem.

It would be helpful if you could provide more information.
What model of laptop do you have?
How old is the laptop?
Is it still under warranty?
Are you using mains power or battery power?
Do any of the power lights come on?
Do you see a cursor?
Do you see any error messages?
It could be something simple like a power problem.
However, there seems to be a known problem with some Samsung laptops locking up due to a UEFI problem. A bit complicated to explain here and no fix available yet.
If it's under warranty take it back to the shop or contact Samsung.

It's a Samsung Notebook NP350V5C if that's of any use to anybody.
It's no longer under warranty as it's just over a year old I've only had it a year at least. I use it both battery and mains I only use the mains when the battery tells me it's down to it's last 10% or so. Can't see any cursor or error message :( when you press the power button it lights up blue as does the light o. The front, when you plug in the mains that light comes on also.
If say the screen is damaged can it be replaced and how much will I be looking at? I do need my laptop for working :(
I don't have he cables to plug it into a tv or another source.
Hope this is enough to go on
