I would love a ceanothus like my mother had in her garden. It was the shape of a small tree about 1.5 to 2 metres tall with a spread of 1.5 to 2 metres. It was smothered in pale blue flowers. Does anyone know which variety this would have been?

Ceanothus griseus 'Yankee Point' would seem ideal for you Anna. You should be able to find one, ready trained as a standard at a good garden centre.

Google image Ceanothus Concha, that's a large one.
Take your pick, but they are considered shrubs rather than trees.

Closest match to your sizes is 'Dark Star'
