We used to play this and I think it involved singing the song as we formed two lines facing each other with hands linked across this above our heads and the 'ship' had to pass under this.
I think that some schools are trying to bring back these playground games and skipping rhymes.
That took me back Mags22, I can remember a skipping song 'On a mountain stands a lady who she is I do not know, all she wants is gold and silver all she wants is a nice young man, so call in my ------o x4 while I go out to play'
Ahhh, yes.
And all those wonderful skipping games.
Anyone remember sitting in a circle, and chanting...'I wrote a letter to my mother, and on the way I lost it' ??
Have been teaching my grandaughter some skipping rhymes that I sang at school. One she likes most is:
Down in the meadow where the green grass grows
That's where ???? hangs out her clothes
She sang and she sang and she sang so sweet
Until she saw ???? coming down the street
???? ???? will you marry me
Yes dear, yes dear at half past three
Mummy made the dumpling and daddy made the tea
All for the wedding at half past three.
Grandaughter always puts her name in plus current "boyfriend". Well, she is only 9!
Kids today don't know they're born! We used to chose a corner and see how far we could squash people in. Plus an alternative to hide and seek called pop. When you saw someone you'd have to run to a pole and shout "One two three pop Fred!" or whoever...
ferlew
Ahhh, yes.
And all those wonderful skipping games.

OMG, the funny things we said. If a game of hide and seek was going on for too long, someone always shouted "the games up the poley and doon the lavvy holey". That meant the game stopped immediately!!
