Following on from a previous thread about washing pillows vs buying new, what are your thoughts on duvets? Do you have them cleaned (how often) or do you buy new at regular intervals?
I've never cleaned our duvet, it's a king size and wouldn't fit in the machine so I would have to take it to the cleaners. It would probably work out cheaper to just buy a new one.
I honestly have never thought about cleaning it. The cover is changed once a week so I've never thought about how minging the duvet underneath may be!
I do shove the kids' duvets in the machine though. They are still at the nappy/pull up stage so have accidents from time to time, but their wee duvets fit in no bother.
Now you've got me thinking about my minging duvet!
I might sound a bit scummy to some, but I don't wash duvets. If you have a cover on it, it's not going to get dirty. I missed the thread about pillows. What was the general opinion? I do buy new pillows fairly regularly. Somehow they do get a bit dirty.
2sp, I've never washed a duvet or had one cleaned. I have two (winter and summer) and change the cover weekly. Mine are probably minging too so maybe think about replacing. Replace pillows rather than washing which I've never found successful.
The last time I washed a duvet and pillows they became misshapen and bunched up so I don't bother washing either any more. I'll just get a new duvet when I need to and washable pillow protectors.
I can get our summer weight one in my machine, but had to use laundrette for the winter one, the cost of washing, then drying was nearly as much as buying a new one. Has anyone tried using two singles? I'm half the size of Mr M, and he hogs ours like mad,or else gets hot and gets it rumpled over me then I get too hot, I'd be interested to know if one each would work
I used to have my down/feather duvet cleaned regularly until the cleaners lost it. They replaced it eventually with a feather one which was ***. Now I buy cheap ones and change them fairly frequently.
I have a summer duvet and a winter duvet. When I change them, the used one goes to the dry cleaners. Even with covers on, they absorb the sweat. No way could I leave them lying about for six months at a time without cleaning them.
We have a dual duvet and use the thin section in summer and the heavier one in winter. We are never cold enough for both so I tend to take which ever one I'm putting into storage to the cleaners first. It comes back folded and wrapped beautifully so I just pop it in the wardrobe just as it it. It usually costs about a tenner and cheaper than buying new.
