Is it okay to put a wooden or laminate floor directly onto a currently tiled floor rather than having to lift all of the tiles up first?

When we had our laminate floor put down, we put it across multiple surfaces - wood on one side, and concrete on the other. Whatever you do you will need to put some of that squadgy underfloor lining down under the laminate - so as a layman, I don't see why not.
You don't say what sort of tiles they are. What you need is a rigid stable substrate. Assuming they are ceramic or quarry tiles, then that's fine.
Next you don't say what sort of wood. If you are talking about thick multilayer engineered board, which often has a top surface in real wood, then this has to be stuck down. Provided the manufacturer's guidance on the adhesive says the under material is OK, then fine.
If you mean that cheapo laminate that clicks together, then as per boxtops comment above.
Please don't use that thin DIY stuff that the Sheds are fond of selling. It'll bounce up and down as you walk on it.

20mm engineered solid or laminated. Glued down, or nailed to battens fixed to the tiles if you can get around the problem of a raised floor.

Thanks for the answers. We are thinking of just going laminate, it is onto a tiled kitchen floor. We don't want to spend too much cos we might be getting more work done in the next few years which will require the floors to be lifted.

I had it done by a top- pro. firm (in Germany) and they laid a thin sheet (about 2mm) of cork, dry onto the tiles first, and then the wooden laminate onto that. No problems.

Haha, thank you LadyB.

Blatant advertising there I think :o)
Oh, almost forgot about the underlay option posted by Khandro. Another good way to go
