Hi,
I'm replacing all the fencing in my garden that also runs along a footpath between mine and my neighbour's house (the path allows the terraced houses further along to access their gardens and wheel their bins out). I want wooden gravel boards and have always thought the maximum total height allowed was 6' so was quoted for 5' panels on top of 12" boards. Guy who's doing it has now told me gravel boards are 6" so I'd want 6' panels on top of those (5' panels wouldn't give as much privacy obviously, when people are walking past), making the total 6' 6". He says that's fine, he's not aware of a 6' maximum (and would've thought he'd know !).
Is he right ?
Thanks ...

up to the council, I would have thought
I agree with Jno, check on your council's website, the info should be there. Where I live, 2m is the maximum so 6'6" but in certain circumstances the maximum allowed can be less than that
I agree with jno - give the council a ring. It's too late if you put one up that's too high and they make you take it down.

Have just checked their website and nothing there about fencing. Aw well, hope I can get in touch with them before he starts it next week, tricky with me working nights ! *sigh*
6 feet where I live.....

Saw that Buenchico, bit of a worry ! Having said that, all the other gardens along the footpath (including my neighbours) have [at least] 6'. BUT I'm seeing 2 metres on websites - 6' 6" + a tiny bit, so looks ok. I think ... ;)
>>>all the other gardens along the footpath (including my neighbours) have [at least] 6'

If they've always had those fences they were probably included within the original planning consents when the houses were built.
Unless there are covenants or special conditions saying otherwise, then it's 2 metres (1 metre against a highway)
I would suggest using 12" concrete gravel boards and concrete posts. Much less maintenance for you in the future.

Did consider concrete Dodger666, but am told it's false economy as they cost more & though don't rot, they crumble. The deciding factor though was it's not a big garden & so much concrete would look, well ... daft.
Thanks everyone.
