Strange Pile In Garden

Seeing the post about a strange hole in garden reminded me of an incident about 3 years ago. We were constantly having to clear cat's mess from the borders and on this occasion my OH said come and look at this. There was a pile of soil about 5 inches high and when he pushed the trowel into it there was a complete tin shaped luncheon meat standing upright covered in soil. There were no teeth marks or any other marks on it. We wondered how did it get there and who in their right mind opens a large tin of meat and then doesn't use it. We disposed of it and the next day there was a deep hole where something had come back looking for it.

My guess is that somebody nearby feeds the foxes. They cache their food and can be quite delicate, able to carry eggs without breaking the shells.

I agree with it being a fox. A neighbour once found a cooked sausage in one of her plant tubs. :) Someone told me a long time ago that they bury dead birds with their feet poking out of the ground and I thought he was winding me up but hearing of people's findings I now believe it.

I thought cats always bury their poo? Whereas foxes do leave poo out on the surface, as territory markers.

My local cats just dump their doo-doo on TOP of the soil. They're all too lazy to cover it. Dirty little s0ds !!

Why does this fallacy that cats bury their excreta still continue ? They don't, although they may have an attempt if they are doing it in your pots and can destroy your potted plants by moving around the fine compost you'd put the plants in.
