Broken Drill Bit

I'm hanging a gate in an awkward place at a funny angle......me not the gate....

Drilling the last hole for the hinges the bit broke inside the post...probably because of the angle I was at.... and I can't get at it.

I think there are tools for this but I don't seem to have one. Is there a way I can do this tonight or do I have to reposition the hinges or buy the extractor tool?

Strong coffee time I think....

No special tools needed, Gnessie.

Remove the hinge so you can get at the face of the timber post.
Use a narrow wood chisel to excavate a small area around the broken bit. Just enough to be able to get a good hold on it with a pair of pliers.
It'll come out with a bit of twisting and pulling. :o)

I'm wondering if you can still get the screw in next to the broken bit, if there is enough space there ?
Maybe try making a new pilot hole with a bradall, as close as poss.

Thank you all......I can't make another hole as it's through the hinge too so I'll excavate and use the bull nosed pliers......I did have a bit of a fidget but you should see the position I'm having to get myself into to do this...

My head's in a ditch and next door is seeing more of my raised posterior than I would like..... :-(

p.s. I'm only doing this because I've developed a passion for Postcrete! Fantastic stuff....you can stick posts and trellis all over your garden by just digging a hole and bunging it in with water....love it!.....☺

I've just recommended Postcrete to a friend who is completely "DIY neutral".
(He's an accountant.)

MrB.....my fence was beginning to wobble in the middle and lean towards next door...I couldn't sort it from her side because of a tree.
To do it my side meant a post about eighteen inches from the original with a crossbar to draw them together.....
To stop it looking ugly I turned it into a feature window surrounded by trellis....all done with postcrete and as firm as....well it's not going anywhere!

It is indeed,Alav........When I think of the pain of erecting a very long fence forty years ago......now I'm sticking posts in everywhere.

I own two of my fences......the third belongs to next door....four years old and wobbling all over the place..

I think when they go away I'll get busy with the postcrete......☺
