Housing Shortage
24 Answers
Does anyone agree with me that councils in the UK should build large quantities of Prefab Bungalows to ease the shortage of affordable Social Housing. I have very fond memories of these so called temporary buildings which were designed to last for 10 years, I know that some lasted much longer than that & were very comfortable to live in.

housing stock. The immediate post-war period saw the building of prefab bungalows with a design life of ten years. Innovative steel-framed properties.

The houses to the left were, and still appear to be, what we called "tin houses". https:/ /www.go ogle.co m/maps/ place/C layton+ Sports+ Centre/ @52.991 3186,-2 .220045 8,3a,75 y,113.3 h,89.23 t/data= !3m7!1e 1!3m5!1 spNtIPf RExfcmO GyS5hZQ XA!2e0! 6s%2F%2 Fgeo2.g gpht.co m%2Fcbk %3Fpano id%3DpN tIPfREx fcmOGyS 5hZQXA% 26outpu t%3Dthu mbnail% 26cb_cl ient%3D maps_sv .tactil e.gps%2 6thumb% 3D2%26w %3D203% 26h%3D1 00%26ya w%3D139 .73997% 26pitch %3D0!7i 13312!8 i6656!4 m2!3m1! 1s0x487 a68773f c63e31: 0x17cb8 fde11d8 5240!6m 1!1e1

There is one being built in the next street ,took 3 weeks from ground clearance to finish.
But as said the problem is the lack of land not building time.

I think it would be an ideal solution but unfortunately some of those destined to live I them and the right on liberal left will complain they are being segregated and denigrated by being in a non standard house that every other hard working person has.
Why should they get a prefab when other people get 'proper' houses?

^^ This is like the one near me, once they are finished you can't tell them from a conventionally built house.

I Do Not Appreciate folk posting to suggest that there is a lack of land to erect Pre-Fabs. There are a few fields behind my cottage residence which are used for grazing horses and could accommodate at least a hundred or more such properties without causing any distress to me.
Snag is that it would interfere with the saddle folk who are often townies who have more money than true country folk.
Hans.

Surely a prefab is better than being homeless or living in a substandard dangerous house or bring in a hostel or bed and breakfast?
There are many derelict areas in towns (mine included) and cities.
Stop developers buying sites and then not building.
We are being inundated with high cost developments and not building for people working in the area.

One can not just continue to sprawl everywhere. We, and other species, need rough ground and countryside and wild places. We for peace of mind, other species for habitats. For sure the short term relief is to build more residential properties but one needs to solve the real problem not simply put off yet again the fateful day when it has to be done. Whether it is prefabs or flats or whatever I don't believe is a big issue. Working out where to put them, is. But the bigger issue is to reduce the population; not go out of our way to grow it whilst using more building as a 'sticking plaster' fix.
