when browsing my latest energy bills I noticed a page for smart meters. Filled out the details and provider has given me an installation date in one month. I thought the roll out is going to take years! should i get it done?

The candidate MUST possess CCN1/CMA1 & MET1 qualifications for the gas installations and have previous experience within the gas industry.
MOCOPA registration and DNO Authorisation would also be prefered, although training will be provided to those without.

Togo - I read the article. It made interesting reading, but somewhat pessimistic I thought. One of the tools used to charge customers is post code. Should we get rid of that too? The tests were theoretical. It is highly unlikely that the charges will rocket by 99%. People at home would feel discriminated against. Pricing according to time of day is already done on economy 7. The new system, if it uses this theory, you could do all your chores at off peak like washing, dishwasher at weekend. People will use less at peak times. The meters could even have tariffs down to individual households, like the elderly or infirm. You could tell the wife to go out during the day or wear an overcoat indoors. Seriously, I think all this is scaremongering.
you know as weird as this may seem its just another step towards big brother.
every single bit of your life is getting monitored closely and before you know it you are at the mercy of the powers that be.
They increase the wifi waves in your house and are capable of transmitting a lot of information.
Saying you dont care about your freedom and rights because it isnt effecting you and you do nothing wrong is like saying you dont care about freedom of speech because you have nothing to say.
These harmless acts of giving up freedom equals a great amount of power someone can hold over yours and your childrens lives.
Im sure everyone will realise this when its way too late though :)

Douglas. I read my meter and post online. A full breakdown of usage of gas and electricity including annual comparisons, usage graphs, costs and accurate bills are provided without the invasive technology employed by the smart meters. I read my own meters and enter the readings as requested by the supplier. Strangely, despite many people advocating the virtues of the meters (during online and heated debates down at the 'local'). None of the pro smart meter lobby want one fitted if they haven't already got one.
