Most ciders are made with two or more varieties of cider apple - though you can get single varietal ciders (as I managed to get one the other day which was rather nice !)
I don't know how much space you have in your garden, but some varieties are sterile with respect to self pollination and require another tree, often of another variety, to pollinate them and thus set the fruit. So you may need at least two or more trees.
I used to make cider from the apple trees in my garden. I dont think the type is that critical because mine were eating apples and turned out great.
The biggest pain is juicing the apples for a hand press you need to finely chop all the apples in a food processor or something like that which is pretty messy and time consuming.
You'll also find that it needs somewhere cool to clear and can take quite a long time for this to happen.
