I put down weed killer in my garden which promised 'kills weeds not grass'. However it killed the grass. If I put down grass seed will it take, or should I cover the burnt area with peat moss first and the put down grass seed.?

I'd check the instructions. How long, does it say, before it stops being poisonous ?

You best bet is, probably to cut out the dammaged area of turf (and then some), then replace with some new turf, thew keep it well watered until established.
