We recently changed the downstairs electric shower for a Mira super powered one and a mixer tap for the wash basin too, as old one was leaking and needed replacement, called our reliable plumber for the job, who we've been using for years....so a good recommended plumber should be competent and better to use than an electrician, as water is involved and if a leak occurs... worst case scenario, would be better for the job.
Doesn't take long either.....our man did the whole job in about an hour and cost around £70, plus he bought the best mixer tap and electric shower suitable for our purposes......bought trade price and receipts given to me for reimbursement....plus a tip of £20 to get it for us. If you know a reliable recommended plumber, bednobs, it helps. Hope you're well :-)

I have no idea why anyone should suggest that you need an electrician. You'd only need a sparkie if you were installing a new electrical circuit. The electrical work involved in changing a shower on an existing electrical supply is no more complicated than changing a 3-pin plug. Any plumber can do the work easily.

Electric showers/power showers come in a range of power (kW) ratings including 7.5, 8.5, 9.5 and 10.5kW, bednobs, so just make sure you buy the one that's a straight replacement for your wiring and power rating. Your plumber will know this....Obviously the higher the rating the more powerful the shower, but most are adequate for their purpose...and good luck with your new shower.

If its a like for like replacement then I would choose an electrician.Most can carry out minor ...and some can carry out most plumbing jobs.If the plumbing is dodgy you may get a wet ceiling...if your earth bonding is not in place or continuous....if the overcurrent protection is inadequate..if the rcd is not in circuit or not working properly....if the ELFI readings are too high..you may get more than a wet ceiling.As both trades charge similar rates it makes sense (to me anyway)..:-)

Beds, there could be a simple answer to your Shower not working, Fuse, Heater Internal heater element, ( That was the cause of hours) did it go off all of a sudden? what was the symptom?

As TWR says..check out the obvious first.However experience dictates unless its a very minor issue and if the unit is a few years old..it will be cheaper to replace it.

I chose electrician because the request was for a like for like electric shower. Not a new power shower, or a mixer tap just a new electric shower. The plumbing element of the install will be minimal - even I could do it! but its always best to have the wiring checked. Was it the wiring for example that failed the old shower? Is the wiring adequate for the new shower? Does the wire enter the back plate st exactly the same place on the latest model? etc

they are simple to replace if you aere using the same brand. just take the front off and memorise the fittings which should match. The last couple of times it turned out to be the solenoid. Not sure what it does but googling solenoid should enable you to find one the same as the one you take out. They are around £15..

Ok Bedknobs if you are replacing like for like your husband can do it though not being electrical certified unless of course he is?

It is a 'like for like job' .. no wiring or pipework alterations. It can be installed by anyone who is capable. A competent handyman should have it done in no time.
Personally I keep a spare shower ' engine' in a box in my garage and when the shower fails I just replace the inside unit as a whole. It involves 3 wires and a pushfit connector .. it takes 10 minutes all in.
... and then order a new engine to go back on the shelf.
