I need to replace said item

I take it they are not standard fitting - so what measurements do I need to take to ensure the new one fits ?

I think the toilet seats have enough adjustment on them to be universal.
I think most are standard.
That said, I bought a replacement a few years back and no matter what I did it wouldn't stay upright >:-(
Trying not to say 'bog standard' ...

... but they are.
They tend to have the same distance between screw holes if that is what you mean by standard fitting. However there are different shapes of loo - rounded nose and pointed nose for example. If you get the wrong shape it won't fit properly, and it won't look right even if it does fit. Also there are different sizes of toilet - our two are different sizes and one seat wouldn't fit the other. I would measure the length, width at the widest point, and distance between screw holes just to make sure.
You could take the old one with you (in a bag) to be certain.
This shows what to measure better than I explained it.

If this is in the UK the toilet seats are pretty standard. I fitted one last week with a London bus on. To be sure you could measure the distance between the two holes on the toilet pan.
The spigots on the seat which go in the holes on the pan are on a cam ie they swivel so there’s about 10mm adjustment on each.
don't start me about toilet seats - I musta bought 4 - all fell off.

You do need to take note of the shape of your toilet - some are quite round and others are elongated. At long last I got one in Argos - nephew/plumber had to still adjust it. It is on about 6 weeks now and that's long for me.
I bet your bursting ;-)
