Over the last couple of days I've noticed a number of ants in my living room so today I had a bit of a spring clean everywhere using some disinfectant. I can still see them crawling around.

Other than ant powder is there any other way of getting rid of them, making sure that they stay out?

There are ant reduction things u can use. Depends where they are coming from. Do you know where, the source? If so you need to tray from there. Awful problems u face... I understand xx

Not sure but I have noticed a couple of gaps around the skirting boards which I have filled with screwed up kitchen towel until I can get some permanent filler.

Thanks bhg. I should've looked before posting :(
Yes I find Nippon ant killer effective. You just get a small tube with a very thick liquid in it.
I usually get several little pieces of aluminium foil. On each one I put a blob and push it under the fridge and similar places. Once the ants have taken it all I just collect up and throw away the foil pieces.

That's looks good and very cheap at 1.99 :o)
Plus delivery!

I suggest you see if a local store has some.
Find their entry point and use silicone sealant to block the hole
