I have a friend who has a very large tree that has been in his garden since the estate was built.

He really wants to know what sort it is.

The only distinguishing thing is that it has lots of seed pods that look identical to those of a
sycamore tree but instead of being in two's that spin down to the ground, they are single pods, and the leaves of the tree are long and thin and on the shiny side.

Can anyone guess what it is from this description please.

Do the leaves hang off in pairs opposite each other. maybe 6 pairs to a stem with black buds at the end? If so it would be an Ash tree.
generally trees are identified by their leaves, do the leaves match any these: https://www.woodlandtrust.org.uk/visiting-woods/trees-woods-and-wildlife/british-trees/native-trees/

Thanks Prudie. I think you are right but I am going from a photo and
its not too clear and I can't see any black buds.
My first thoughts was ash too
The one in my garden is shedding lots of seed at the moment, many of these trees are under threat of dying off due to disease.
