I've been helping to rip up some old matting on my team's cricket nets and it has left behind some stubborn mastic on the concrete surface. Do you think it would be possible to adapt a lawn mover to scrape it off?

No.
Use acid.
Don't do what the guy in The Archers did, and use petrol to soften it.
He blew up the Grey Gables Hotel.

However it suggests there may be a solvent to help remove it, as apparently he should have used that.
I hope that your efforts are successful.
The chap on the Archers would have been okay if he hadn't tried to make toast at the same time! You are right, petrol is not recommended!
Don't think it would do the mower a lot of good, I'd get a spade under it.
I'd try pouring hot water on it, then try scraping it off with a spade. If that didn't work, then acid/solvent might do it.
