Disabled Outdoor Rails

Do any of the big DIY firms (B&Q or similar) do galvanized rails and all the fittings?

Found a place online in Yorkshire, but they charge £70 delivery (not unreasonably).

Allen do you need a big store? Amazon do a good variety or you might find a local aids store who would deliver.

Google 'outdoor grab rail' (or 'outdoor grab bar') for loads of possibilities. You might find that some of those on offer provide a better grip than the basic old-fashioned galvanised ones (which can be very slippery in the rain or when its frosty).

If you're looking for more than just grab rails though (e.g. the types of rails that are placed alongside steps, rather than those that fit onto a wall) try eBay. e.g. this seller (with excellent feedback ratings) offers a possibly suitable product for £65, with free delivery:

Thanks all - Amazon's versions are incredibly expensive - £100 a metre! Having looked at the ebay version (£55 per metre with fittings), my North Yorkshire place looks cheap after all! We need about 7.5 metres of handrail with uprights, fittings, etc., and theirs comes to under £100 (plus the £70 delivery), so overall still reasonable.

Plus (and this always counts for a lot) they're friendly, and offer good advice - not what you'd get from Wickes etc.

If you are disabled try your local council or social workers and ask for a home assessment. Then they will send an Occupational Therapist to assess your needs. Try this before spending a fortune .

Thanks Andres. Brent (London) are very strapped for cash. 15 years back, they did put a few rails from door to pavement, and very useful they were.

The ones I want now are in the back garden, to help me get to the shed, and I very much doubt if they’d help. Anyway, we can afford it, so I’d feel as if I was taking it from some other more needy soul.

Better news. The Yorkshirefirm is free delivery over £100, and our order’s about £150!

I would go down the route Andres has taken and contact adult social services, before you do anything else.

Chipchopper, its pretty standard now in the Uk to only provide outdoor rails to one exit to the home and if there is an exit that doesn't need them then none at all will be provided.
