central heating pump sticking.

When I turned my heating on for the first time this year the rads would not heat up.After about 10 minutes the pump started up as if it hd been sticking. The system has worked perfectly since this happened .Can anyone please advise me on what I can due to prevent any occurence of this happening in the future.

Fernox or similar do additives which prevent corrosion and sticky pumps.

This is a very common problem. It helps if you turn on your heating about once a month during the summer.

If the sticking of the pump persists, usually you can get it going by giving the pump a whack with something hard but not too hard. The heel of a shoe is about right.

If it is an old system then a thorough clean through including removing the rads to flush out can be beneficial but normally just adding it to the tank if you have an open system or draining a little and adding to a sealed system will do.

Running the heating for a short while every month will also keep the pump free. Most modern systems also use the pump to circulate hot boiler water to the cylinder all year and don't suffer this problem.
