Shoota; pousse d'épine is absolutely delicious. 5l red wine, 1l local eau de vie, bag of sugar and an armful of young blackthorn shoots from around the base of the bush. Leave for a month then strain and drink sparingly. 15-20% abv, sweet and almondy. If you don't like the sound of it then stick to your sloe gin.
Should be a good year for sloes this year. An old farmer relative called it a "Blackthorn winter"! But failing that, damson vodka or gin is a perfectly acceptable substitute.
