Wasp Nest......

...Chez TTT has a wasp nest in the cavity wall. Bought some stuff on line to fix the issue, false economy, didn't work! Had to get the pros in. Guy just showed up here about 5 minutes, sorted, 80 sovs! Not a bad hourly rate! Still worth it If it's fixed I guess!

About 10years ago I called in a professional exterminator as we had a low sloping tiled roof with a wasps nest underneath. He clad himself up and informed me he was going to spray white powder under the eaves. He said they get quite angry when sprayed and ,in the trade, they call them Ghosts as they re buzzing around furiously in their new coat of white. I was advised to ensure all the windows and doors were shut before he sprayed. I came to the window and gave him the thumbs up for the 'go ahead'. Next thing I saw was the lance quickly extracted and him being chased by the angry swarm down the front path. I was amazed to see him rip of his hood ,jump in his van and drive off..I had to ring him up 3 days later and remind him to collect his fee.

No. This nest was in the loft space. Just accessing by the hatch stirs them up when the light beams through. I wore my old respirator and noddy suit and using a torch is a no no. Quick spray and leg it.
I did ,however ignite about three Leyandi trees at the bottom of the garden in the access lane. A row of about 60 trees at about 30' high.
A nest had decided to take over an old fox hole underneath one of them. The wasps were attracted to some windfall apples in our garden and were becoming a nuisance when we were eating on the patio. I took a small can of paraffin and piece of paraffin soaked rag and threw the paraffin in the nest followed by the ignited paper and stood back. Whooosh. The flames took hold of the inside canopy and went up like a rocket. The wind blew the conflagration to the next two trees as well.
My sprint for the garden hose would of done credit to Roger Banister.
Fortunately my hose was long enough and I fortunately extinguished the fire. The gap between the other trees is visible today since the occurrence 20 years ago. Perhaps the unlit Paraffin would have been a better option.
