Airing Cupboard

When properties are renovated do they still have airing cupboards?  If not, where do they put their sheets and towels, and clothes that aren't quite dry?  Just wondering ....

Looking at some of the (affordable) new house layouts there doesn't seem to be much storage space for anything. I often wonder where people put all their "stuff".

My flat had a tall heated drying cupboard vented to the outside when I moved in. I replaced it with a tumble drier - less creasing.

If you had a combi boiler in the what was the airing cupboard, I say what was because a combi boiler does not give any heat out within the said cupboard unlike the old style boilers.

When I had my combi put in some 15 years ago I also got them to put a very small radiator on the wall inside the cupboard, so we still have an airing cupboard. " The wife" would not have been at all happy without one. :0)

It's usually the tank giving the heat, no tank no heat.

We have one but its never used. Tumble dryer seems to be permentanty on in the winter.

To a certain degree,yes the tank does give some heat out, but it is also normally lagged to keep the water hot. The old boilers did get hot on the outer casing. Combi boilers dont.

Most people didnt have the boiler in the airing cupboard though.

Some did some didn't, if you had both in the airing cupboard then you had a fab airing cupboard. :0)

Of course their are are drying/airing racks that clip onto a radiator - might be one solution.

It wasnt so much the tank itself giving out the heat as the plumbing around it, usually the valves pumps are next to it.  And in all the houses I have worked on I have never seen the pipework lagged.

Those rad things damage the paint, especially if you have young kids running around!

Thinking about this more so, the idea of the combi was to not waste any heat and to save money. But on losing your airing cupboard ( old boiler) leaves you with no where to air ?dry your washing, hence your left with little option but to purchase a dryer, and they are also expensive to run. The combi also wastes a lot of water because you have to leave the tap running for sometime before the hot water comes through. So not so great all round.

my combi is in a full height cupboard & it's definitely warmer in there than in the rest of the flat (when the heating is on).

Davebro. Yes one answer to it, and sometimes we do hang the odd towel on one of those racks, but constant use with lots of washing can result in damp on walls near the rad, also if you have paper on walls it can result in paper departing from the wall.

One can drape underpants over the back of a chair in front of an open laptop with The Answerbank on screen.

The virtual hot air will soon dry the kecks.

nicebloke - modern combis usually have a reserve of hot water so not heating up cold from scratch when you turn on the tap. Not much more delay than there would be drawing from a hot water tank.

And right on que, I have just heard the tumble drier bleep followed by her who must be obeyed slaming the door on another load!  And there are only two of us in the house.

We bought 2 of these type heaters for our airing cupboard when we had the hot water tank taken out.  They are on all the time and give out just enough heat to keep things aired.

13.11 I know what you mean, but I have switched that off, and have it on eco. If its on, the burners light up through out the the day to keep the DHW plate to plate hot, its a waste of gas throughout the day, water is cheaper than gas. Even the gas engineer said its pointless heating and re heating just for the odd time you need hot water.
