Hi,

We're getting this done haveing seen the reports of gas prices rising by 25%.

I've got a quote, and it's about 400 for the walls and roof for our house (which is detached). I didn;t think that was too bad.

Can anyone tell me if you notice a dramatic change in your bills, or the difference with the heat in your ho,e etc?!

Basically I just want to know I'm not wasting my money!

Thanks

Works very well and well worth the money. We felt a difference right away and believe that we are saving money by being able to keep the thermostat lower.

Well worth it. The house won't lose heat so quickly so the boiler doesn't use as much fuel, it will feel a little cosier so you could keep the room thermostat slightly lower. You could get your money back in few years if everthing else like double glazing and draught proofing is ok.
Not sure what you mean by getting the roof done. Do you mean loft insulation?

Thaks for the replies.

We're having our UPVC windows replaced this week too, as all the gaskets have gone and we get condensation between the 2 panes in the summer. I'm hoping this will also help as I'm sure the current ones can't be that effective.

Gef - by the roof I do mean about getting that insulated too as the stuff in there at the moment is very old and almost disappeared!
Insulating the roof well is a higher priority than the walls - but do the walls as well if you can. Now should have 250mm of fibreglass in the flat loftspace - this is typical of the minimum a new build has to have.
It's well worth doing all this work especially if you don't intend to move house. As with everything else out there is a racket going on so use only tradesmen you know or have good references from satisfied customers.
Hi, I don't know how well it acutally works as I am not a home-owner and have not looked into it in that respect. My uncle told me that he noticed much more of a difference having Loft insulation installed than when he had Cavity Wall insulation installed later on.

The reason I'm replying, is that I work for a company who install cavity wall insulation and loft insulation. The company I work for can get grants from various utility companies (on behalf of a government energy efficiency scheme), so if you can tell me a bit of information about yourself and your house I can give you idea if your quote is reasonable (i'm not a salesman, but i can tell you if you have been quoted over the odds)

First off, we have some contracts where its free to people who are on certain governement benefits, so do you recieve any benefits?
Detached or Semi or Mid-terrace?
House or Bungalow or Flat?
How many bedrooms does it have?
How old is your house?
What is your utility company for electric/gas?
Finally: I can work out what we would charge a customer, with a standard house, with that info. But if your house is bigger than the norm (for its type) then there would be additional charges, so is your house particularly large?
