Lead pipes

My father in law has lead pipes to his gas cooker. He needs a new cooker will he have to have new copper pipes installed or will they fix it to the lead ones already there?

Really depends on the Gas Fitter - some will, some won't. I suspect some of that is dependent upon the ability of the Fitter to work with lead - some simply don't know how or are out of practice.

If the existing pipework is in good enough condition there is no reason why a small section of copper can't be 'sweated' on for the cooker connection.

I belivee that the fitter is breaking the law if he does not connect the cooker to the mains via copper piping?

I think you'll find that lead piping in any dwelling has been illegal for some years now. Definitely illegal for water, not so sure about gas though, Corgi registered fitter will keep your father right.
