I had ants once and did two things. Firstly, I can't remember what it was called, but there was a pesticide specially for ants in a tube - by spreading a line on worktops or whatever, you created a barrier the ants would not cross.

Number 2 was basically an ant trap - you put it near where you think the ants are coming from, and something in it attracts and kills them.

For saitsafction tho you can't beat zapping the soandsos with a spray.

There must be some sort of food supply they are going to therefore you need to identify it. You can buy from Garden Centres Ant-Kill products or you could try putting down simple talcum powder either of which the ants will(should)take away and of course will kill a few off.

Really though they must come in from somewhere and it is this area that you need identify and deal with.

You can either spray the ******* with any walking insect spray and then they will just come back later or you have to take some time and be patient and watch them to see where they are actually entering the building, then if it is though a hole in the wall or something fill up the hole with polyfilla or whatever and go outside and try to locate where they are coming out and fill that also, then spray all the remaining ants you can find, be aware that there will be stray ants in the kitchen which will find their way back to the original entry point for a couple of days after that, so keep an eye on them and spray those also.
After that always keep aware of ants around the kitchen and as soon as you see one get rid of it, if you ignore the first ant you see then the next day they will everywhere again. I live where it is warm and we have ants everywhere outside the house but if you take the time to keep an eye on them you can keep them out of the house but you can't relax for a minute or they are in again.
I agree with parkesquay - talcum powder thinly sprayed around the edge of the room will stop them, as well as under windowsills and around doors, and in any holes. They seem to hate it. I have also heard that a saucer of vinegar on the floor would help. Try not to leave pets' food on the floor, it will become full of ants by the morning. Yuk.
