We are considering having a water meter fitted but don't know if we would save money. Our current bill is around 295 per year. I live with my 19 year old daughter in a 3 bed semi and my husband (who is in the army) comes home about once a month. Can anyone please tell me if it's worth having a meter or not? Thanks.

I would say have it fitted!. My bills ( Severn Trent) were 317 in 2002, 335 in 2003, I then switched and this year, 2006, I'm paying 19.39 (Direct Debit) for 11 months, which equates to 213.00 p/a. There are two of us, (no swimming pool!) in a 3 bed semi.
I would go along with what chasbo has said, however, we don't have a meter while all our neighbours do, the reason for this, is we have a handicapped daughter, and we are constantly using the washing machine, (a double), for her duvets and sheets, plus baths etc, but my neighbours all say its cheaper.
for the past 7 years i have fitted water meters for sww and as your rates are based on a 2.2 family you will save money. from the feedback i get 2people will cut their bill by almost 2/3s and 3 people will almost half their bill.also in the south west water area you can have your meter fitted for free and if you dont like it you can have it removed again within the first 12 months. so its a no lose situation, thats in the sww area it may differ elsewhere

You really do have to work out your useage first. Like how many baths a week, washing up, showers, toilet flushing, washing machine (full/half loads) watering the lawn, cleaning cars. Most water meter sites give you an online chart to enable you to work out your approximate consumption. For a larger family then it is still cheaper paying the extortionate prices, for a smaller family or a water conscious one it is much much cheaper to have a meter fitted.

There is recent thoughts of many water companies making the fitting of meters obligatory. They will profit from this as most homes have more than one person and they will make more from the metered system. To the frugal water users or single people they will profit - and be the only ones who will.

There is only the two of us and we live in a bungalow. When we moved into the property the was a water meter already fitted. We weren't too happy about it, but it has saved us quite a bit of money.
