Marigolds

Can anyone tell me how to stop birds stealing marigold seedlings that have been newly planted, even though they are covered by netting?

I've always had this problem, the only effective method i've found, and I think I must have tried them all, is to wait until they are quite big, and even then, some still go missing, but not as many as when they can still be classed as seedlings.
