Usually by looking at the front doors! Seriously though the first thing that most people who buy their council house do is to change the front door as all the council owned ones have the same front door and by changing it they are showing that they now own it.
You could try:-

www.ourproperty.co.uk

It obtains its information from the Land Registry.

I agree with spudqueen. I have found this to be a pretty accurate way of telling - and i speak from experience as i live in a street that was originally all council (owned) houses. One by one, they have been bought from the council and the first thing that happens is that the front door changes. The second is that the front garden gets tidied.

From the examples in my street and surrounding streets, i would say this was probably 90% accurate.

My friend bought her council house a few years back and the first thing she did was to change the front door. When I walk down her street now most of the houses have new front doors as most of the houses are now privately owned.
