my local poundshop is selling roses. The stems look healthy enough but they have a few sickly looking white shoots growing from them. Will these roses grow okay?

Probably... the white shoots are such since the plant has been deprived of sunlight. Some of my best roses are cast off's and cheap ones bought at the end of the season. Remember to dig the planting hole large enough and use lots of water during and after transplanting... They love sun, by the way. Make sure it can get at least 8 hours where ever you plant it...

Until last year, I have bought cheap roses every spring, and they always grew beautifully after a while, but never lasted over the winter.

I'd just try it, you don't loose much for a pound.

I've bought fruit bushes from Poundland looking like that and most of them have been fantastic, I've had an odd one die off, but for a pound compared to the prices in garden centres, it is worth taking the risk

I agree, give them a go...

I bought this one from my local supermarket for 1 & I've had it a few years now. It always flowers & has never had a single aphid or disease....I'll probably find it's keeled over tomorrow now I've said that! :o)

silly link, sorry it's here & it's called Deep Secret.

Many thanks for your quick answers. I wanted ten roses until I found they would cost around 70 in my local garden centre. I called in to Poundland this afternoon and got the last four they had in stock, but now, thanks to your comments, I'll check out other stores.

It's only a pound, but you do get what you pay for, a little more and you will certainly have a better success rate.

I recently brought some climbing roses and paid under 10 each, which may seen quite a lot up front, but over 10-20+ years they are an investment. Paying only a pound per rose may not give you the same return, so although they are cheap they are a waste of money.
