This is not really a question - just a comment

We have a whole load of slow worms in our garden (Somerset) - is this rare ?

I know that they eat slugs but our cats are taking a keen interest in them and I am worried that the cats may harm them ...

Are they a "protected species" ?

No they're actually quite common especially in the south.

The cat may well kill one if it's a bit of a hunter though

One thing in the slow worms favour is, is its a mast of escape, it can get away pretty fast if it needs to and can also fool preditors into losing interest by playing dead (hence the name) Another little trick they have is the abillity to jetison a piece of their tail while making their getaway.
Sorry it should read - master.
